Now that October is here, I am in full-fledged Halloween decorating mode.  I tend to stick to Halloween decorations that are cute – not scary.  I am all about pumpkins and scarecrows in the month of October!  However, it just wouldn’t be Halloween without a giant spider web Halloween decoration on the front of our house.

Ever since I was little, when October rolled around, my mother made a giant spider web for Halloween for the front of our house, carefully crafting it from a skein of black yarn.  All the neighbors loved it.  When I got married and had kids of my own, I continued the tradition.  We always get a lot of questions during Trick-or-Treating asking how we made it.  So I thought I would share a quick blog post to show how we do it.

In years past, I have constructed our giant outdoor spider web with yarn.  This year, I tried something new – macrame cord.  It’s a lot thicker so I think it will stand up to wind and rain better.  Plus it makes the spider web easier to see from the street.

Looking for a fun Halloween house decoration to make with your family this October?  Check out the tutorial below.   It’s quick and easy – and best of all inexpensive!

Instructions to make a giant spider web for Halloween

First you will need to figure out where you are going to put your spider web.  You may have to get a bit creative if you have a two story house. (At our old house, which was 2 stories with a flat front, we made the spider web in front of the garage door.)

Next you will want to figure out how big you want your giant spider web decoration to be. You are going to have a strand running straight up and down in the center and then 2 strings forming an X.  These are going to run from your gutter to the ground.  I find it helpful to use the U-shaped garden stakes to mark where the strings are going to run so you get a general idea of how big your web will be.  Since we have an awning over our front porch, we used gutter clips that are used to hang Christmas lights to attach the support lines at the top.

Starting with the center string, tie it to the gutter clip, or use a staple gun to secure it at the top.  If you use a staple gun, it is a good idea to tie a big knot in the string so it doesn’t pull out of the staple.  Tie the other end of the string to the garden stake and pound it into the ground.  Cut off the extra string.  You want the strings fairly tight as they will loosen over time.  Repeat the procedure for the other two strings, forming an X.

At the center where the X and center strings meet is where you will start forming the web.  I find it helpful to tie a knot in the center together so it won’t pull off as you are forming the web.  Next you are going to wind your string around the spokes.  Instead of cutting off strings, you are just going to work with the entire skein, pulling out lengths as you need them.

Run the string about 4 inches up the center spoke and loop it around once.  Then move to the next spoke and wind your string around it.  If you are using regular yarn, you don’t really need to tie at each string.  If you go over the spoke and then under and back over before you move on to the next string, it stays secure without any tying. Just be sure to pull it fairly tight as you are stringing the web and you will be fine.  However with the macrame cord, I recommend making a knot at each spoke of the web to help secure it.

When you get back to the starting spoke, wind your string about 4-6 inches above your last thread and continue around the spokes again.  Repeat until the web is the desired size and tie off.

Tie a string around your spider and position him on the spider web as desired. The web should take just 15 to 20 minutes to create from start to finish.

Unless you get a really bad storm, this diy giant spider web Halloween decoration should survive the entire month of October.
